Sensitive Skin Around the Eyes: How to Care for It Gently

If the skin around your eyes stings, flushes or feels tight more easily than the rest of your face, you're not imagining it. The eye area is the thinnest, most delicate skin you have — several times thinner than the skin on your cheeks — with fewer oil glands to protect it. That makes it quicker to show dryness, quicker to react to new products, and quicker to look tired when it's under strain.

The good news: sensitive eyes don't need a complicated routine. They need a gentle, consistent one. Here's how to build it.

Why the eye area reacts so easily

Because the skin here is so thin, anything that irritates it — rubbing, harsh cleansing, heavily fragranced products — has an outsized effect. There's also constant movement: blinking, squinting and smiling all day long. Add in the fact that this skin holds less moisture than the rest of your face, and you have an area that needs a lighter touch than anywhere else in your routine.

Common triggers include rubbing your eyes (especially with makeup on), removing eye makeup aggressively, sleeping face-down, and applying products formulated for the face — with stronger actives or higher fragrance levels — right up to the lash line.

Gentle habits that make a real difference

Before you change a single product, change how you touch the area. Use your ring finger — it naturally applies the least pressure — and pat rather than rub. Remove eye makeup by holding a soaked pad against the lids for a few seconds and sweeping gently, instead of scrubbing. And resist rubbing tired eyes during the day; it feels satisfying, but it tugs at delicate skin and can leave the area looking redder and puffier.

What to look for in an eye product

For sensitive skin, the ingredient list matters as much as what a product promises. Look for calming, skin-friendly ingredients such as panthenol (pro-vitamin B5), chamomile extract, squalane and hyaluronic acid — all chosen to hydrate and comfort rather than challenge the skin. Our Lifting Eye Cream pairs these soothing ingredients with a mineral-silicate micro-film that sets in around two minutes to visibly smooth and tighten the look of the under-eye area — a temporary cosmetic lifting effect, with skincare underneath that's designed to be gentle.

Freshness matters for sensitive skin too. Every time a jar or open tube is exposed to air and fingertips, the formula inside changes a little. That's one reason we use single-dose 1 ml tubes: each application comes from a freshly opened tube, so the formula reaching your skin hasn't been sitting open on a shelf.

How to patch test properly

Whenever you try a new eye product — ours included — patch testing is worth the 24 hours it takes. Apply a small amount to the inner forearm or behind the ear and wait a day. If all is calm, try a small amount on the orbital bone (the ridge under the eye), keeping it away from the lash line and never inside the eye. Eye products are for external use only, and if you experience persistent irritation, stop using the product.

Keep it simple, keep it consistent

Sensitive skin around the eyes rewards restraint: fewer products, gentler application, and formulas built to comfort. A light, hydrating eye cream applied with a soft touch morning and evening will do more for the look of the area than a shelf full of harsher options.
